WELCOME. Come on in and make yourself at home.
The practice of doing business like the old general store is with us in many ways here at the WHEATLAND GENERAL STORE.
The term customer is not in our vocabulary. We recognize the want for personal attention and extend every effort to make you feel comfortable and at home. You might enter as our guest but you will leave feeling like family.
We hope our store exceeds your expectations, not only with the overall look and feel, but also with the quality and uniqueness of the merchandise.
We scour the countryside and exhibit an ever-changing mix of interesting antiques, architectural elements, collectibles, primitives, and vintage items. We also offer quality hand-crafted items from local artisans and an assortment of quality manufactured merchandise.
Old and young alike will enjoy our penny candy and bottled soda pop.
The idea of re-creating that “old general store feeling” has been years in the making for proprietor Anita Lazenby Westmoreland. Growing up in north Mississippi, Anita fondly remembers the local general store as the center of commerce and community happenings.
A Texas transplant for over 40 years now, Anita has become a part of the fabric of the local community of Wheatland. Her husband, Malcolm Jan Westmoreland, has lived his entire life in the community on the family farm, even attending the old Wheatland School.
Along with daughter, Katherine Westmoreland Novak, the third generation to live on the family farm, the two manage the Wheatland General Store. Even Katherine’s children, the fourth generation now living on the family farm help out.
Referred to for years as “Whiskey Flats” because of its unincorporated position across county lines and reputation as a home to strip joints, firecracker stands, and gambling halls, the community of Wheatland still maintains that rural feeling though just minutes away from the metroplex. The community commands the respect to once again be called by its proper name.
That is the idea behind naming the business the WHEATLAND GENERAL STORE.
We hope the store, in true old fashion, can serve as a community gathering point where true down-home humor and folksiness is shared while solving the problems of the world over a cup of coffee.
Wheatland lies along Highway 377 south, eight miles from IH-20, half-way between Benbrook and Cresson.
Highway 377 is fast becoming an antique corridor to the weekend recreation/shopping destination town of Granbury.
Along the way you pass the Benbrook Antique Mall, Burgess and Parks Antique Mall, Wheatland General Store – Antiques, Etc. Etc. Etc., and Grandma’s Attic Antique Mall.
